Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, a successful student should be able to:
1.Show a knowledge of the varied nature of rural livelihood systems in developing countries.
2.Demonstrate an ability to critically assess the impact of different agents of change on livelihoods.
3.Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of current debates in rural and social development, and policies to promote development.
4.Demonstrate an ability to formulate academic arguments and to present them in written and oral form.
5.Reflect critically and continuously upon their learning: identifying strengths and building upon them; identifying weaknesses and addressing them throughout the course.
Module Outline
This course considers the varied nature of rural livelihood systems in developing countries. We consider livelihood change, diversification and migration, and the interconnectedness of the global and the local in causing change in rural societies. The course will explore the impact of different agents of change on livelihoods ¿ examples might include the role of non-governmental organisations, the impact of modern biotechnology and the effects of trade on livelihoods. The course draws primarily (though by no means exclusively) on evidence from Sub-Saharan Africa and India.
