Geographical Information Systems (L7032)

Geographical Information Systems

Module L7032

Module details for 2010/11.

18 credits

FHEQ Level 5

Module Outline

The course is designed to introduce students to the various components that constitute a Geographical Information System (GIS), while providing them with practical skills in using these tools. Using leading GIS software, the students will gain direct experience of a range of data collection and input, database, analytical and visualisation techniques. These will include, georeferencing, vector/raster integration, data classification. This methodology will be illustrated through a range of social and environmental applications, emphasising its decision-assisting potential and looking at some real world examples from the fields of disaster management and development. Additionally the students will participate in fieldwork collecting input data and validating their computer-based work. The skills acquired on the course should be sufficient for any student who subsequently wishes to employ GIS in their Undergraduate Thesis.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, a successful student should be able to
1. Demonstrate theoretical understanding of the principles of GIS.
2. Conceptualise geographic space within the constructs of a GIS.
3. Demonstrate a broad awareness of current GIS software.
4. Handle spatial and attribute data during input, storage, manipulation and display.
5. Identify an arena of enquiry having a spatial dimension and have a critical appreciation of conducting analysis using GIS software in pursuit of that enquiry.
