Module Outline

The course will examine the various procedures used to measure development. In addition to conceptual issues the course will require that students gather data (usually from online sources), and provide a critique of the information.

Data at international, national regional and local will be reviewed as will different forms of aggregation, for example urban-rural, household and workplace information.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, a successful student should be able to:
1. Identify principal sources of data used to measure development.
2. Assemble, display and evaluate specific data sets.
3. Critically evaluate the different conceptual models on which measurement procedures are based.
4. Provide examples of the use of specific data sets.
