Module Outline

During their final year, each student is required to prepare a study to illustrate their ability to design and implement an empirical investigation in geography. The Geography Undergraduate Thesis entails the collection and analysis of primary data as a significant component. Students will have been given instruction in specific techniques of collecting and handling data and primary source material as well as advice on the presentational format required in the Level 2 course Research Skills in Human Geography or Research Skills in Physical Geography, and will be given individual supervision in the design, conduct and writing up of their project throughout their final year. During the second week of the Spring Term students will have a formal Individual Review (IDR) with their supervisor which will monitor progress. The format and content of the IDR will be decided on an individual basis by the supervisor.

Learning Outcomes

1. Show knowledge of a specific geographical topic.
2. Show knowledge of a particular set of conceptual approaches to geographical study.
3. Understand the challenges of empirical geographical research.
4. Overcome practical research problems (e.g. collection, handling and analysis of data and writing-up).
5. Demonstrate that they can produce a professional piece of work based upon original research.
