Module Outline
The course introduces students to geological processes and time. The main topics comprise: earth structure and composition, continental drift and sea-floor spreading, plate tectonics, earthquakes, volcanoes, geological time, earth history, mountain building, crustal deformation, denudation, sedimentation, structure and development of the earth's surface, the pace of geological change.
Learning Outcomes
A) Knowledge and Understanding Outcomes
1. a broad understanding of the nature and development of the earth's structure and composition;
2. a critical awareness of the significance of spatial and temporal scale on major geological processes and their role in shaping the earth's surface;
3. an appreciation of how the discipline of geology relates to physical geography;
B) Intellectual Skills
4. the ability to evaluate the validity of theories describing major geological processes.
5. the ability to interpret the origin and evolution of the earth's surface, and major features of the crust, mantle and core;
6. the ability to engage in self-learning and critical reflection;
7. the ability to interpret maps showing the main tectonic and geological units of the earth's crust.
C) Fieldwork Skills
8. the ability to observe, describe and summarise geographical features in the field.
