Description of mosaic in text: | Thus al-Walid wrote to his amil [lieutenant, governor] in al-Madinah, ‘Umar ibn-‘Abd-al-‘Aziz ordering him to destroy the mosque and reconstruct it. Meanwhile, he forwarded to him money, mosaic, marble and eighty Greek and Coptic artisans from Syria and Egypt.[…]In the year 246, caliph Ja’far al-Mutawakkil ordered that the mosque of al-Madinah be repaired. Much mosaic was subsequently carried to it; and the year 247 marked the completion of the work. |
