Original mosaic set up by Galla Placidia, emperor Valentinian III and Honoria. 15C mosaic probably by Melozzo da Forlic. 1480 (Krautheimer) or by Baldassarre Peruzzi in 1500-9 (Antelli).
In the 16th C it was still possible to recognise the effigy of pope Celestine I (422-433) in the original mosaic decoration (Brandenburg, p. 108).
